Brush twice a day with fluoride

It sounds obvious, but regular brushing remains the basis for good oral care. Brush your teeth at least twice a day, for two minutes each time. Choose a toothpaste with fluoride: this mineral strengthens the enamel and protects against cavities. Don’t forget to brush your gum line and tongue. This prevents gum problems and bad breath.

Use toothpicks or interdental brushes daily

Brushing your teeth alone only reaches 60% of the tooth surface. The rest of the plaque and food remains are between your teeth and molars. By using toothpicks or interdental brushes daily, adjusted to the size of your interdental spaces, you prevent inflammation and keep your gums healthy.

Be careful with acids and sugars

What you eat and drink has a direct effect on your teeth. Acidic drinks (such as soda, fruit juices and wine) damage the enamel, and sugars are food for harmful bacteria. Limit the number of eating and drinking moments to a maximum of seven per day and consciously choose tooth-friendly alternatives such as water, vegetables and fibre-rich snacks.

Don’t postpone a visit to the dentist

A regular check-up – at least once a year – helps to identify and address problems in time. So don’t wait until you experience symptoms. Your dentist can often easily treat small cavities or incipient gum infections before they get worse. Prevention is key.

Protect your teeth when playing sports or grinding your teeth

Are you a fanatic athlete or do you notice that you grind your teeth at night? Then it is wise to wear a mouthguard or custom-made grinding plate. This prevents wear, cracks or even broken teeth. Your dentist or dental hygienist can advise you well on this.

Make brushing fun and routine
