Oral microbiome balance: The new beacon for oral health
In collaboration with Prof. Egija Zaura (ACTA) and Prof. Wim Teughels (KU Leuven), GUM supports the next step in preventive oral care: a modern approach to daily oral hygiene that goes beyond cleaning alone and focuses on maintaining a healthy balance in the oral microbiome.
The oral microbiome – the community of microorganisms living in the mouth – plays a key role in keeping gums healthy and maintaining long-term oral health. Under ideal conditions, the microbiome is in balance: beneficial bacteria help keep the ecosystem stable and support the body’s natural defenses. However, when this balance is disrupted, it may contribute to common oral health challenges such as gingivitis, periodontal issues, halitosis and sensitive gums.
While traditional oral care often focused on reducing or eliminating bacteria, scientific insights increasingly show that supporting a healthy microbiome is just as important. Similar to other areas of health, dentistry is shifting toward a more balanced perspective: the goal is not to sterilize the mouth, but to promote the conditions in which the microbiome can function in harmony.
GUM translates these scientific developments into practical knowledge for oral health professionals. With a strong focus on prevention, patient communication and evidence-based solutions, GUM helps dental teams integrate the concept of oral microbiome balance into daily routines and professional recommendations – building a foundation for sustainable oral health.
